Vernon Rettig, an ex felon, turned wealthy industrialist, uses his Church as a platform for religious zealotry and for furthering his political ambitions. Laura Harding credits Rettig with helping her father cope with life in prison where both men were once incarcerated. With unflinching gratitude she publishes a vile Anti-Semitic, anti-government monthly bulletin, the Voice of White Conscience. In his quest for international recognition Rettig conspires to bomb his Church to blame Jews for the crime. The bombing spins out of control and international conspiracy, grand theft, bigotry, lust and blackmail culminate in murder. At a social function Laura meets Dan Golnicki and they fall in love. Mesmerized by her beauty, charm and intellect, Dan, the son of a Holocaust survivor, agonizes over her stridency in advancing the hatred that is so repugnant to him. She doesnt ask and he doesnt tell her that he is a Jew, though the continuing charade devastates him. Rettig, who considers Laura to be his surrogate daughter, disapproves of the relationship and his meddling causes visceral tension between Laura and Dan that even their torrid lovemaking cannot assuage. As Rettigs checkered past catches up with him, he is staggered by blows he never imagined possible. His disillusioned collaborators defect and the merciless retribution he suffers from their hands is a fitting punishment for his crimes.
